DIY/Crystals On a Budget
Hey crafty witches!
I know that a lot of witches, especially those that are on a budget and/or in the broom closet,(like me!) can't afford to dish out for a lot of nice crystals.
Well, I have a possible solution for you. Try growing your own! It's easy, inexpensive, and the results are BEAUTIFUL. I found this tutorial when searching for crafts to do with my little cousin. We love making these together!: https://youtu.be/BHRFBKjqEvg
"But Falcon! These synthetically made crystals won't have the same magic/energy/healing properties as natural stones!"
I know, I know. BUT, since you're growing them out of a solution, charge them with your own energy/magic/intention! Write sigils on slips of paper and let it dissolve in the water as they grow.
Have fun with these lovely, inexpensive altar decorations! I will be posting pictures of my latest batch tomorrow morning.

It's worth noting that I've found certain artificial crystals to be perfectly capable of holding energy.
It's also worth noting that uncut gems - which carry the same properties as the most beautifully cut stones - are much, MUCH cheaper than their cut and polished versions.

I have found the energy of man made crystals to be different, but no less potent than the "natural" ones. I find the idea of charging/ dedicating them during their growth to be very intriguing !
What i do not like are those dealers that do not tell their customers that a stone is man made/synthetic. Same goes for altered/coated stones. While this may have an effect on the energy of the stone, it is only fair to tell their customers the truth about their purchase, to the best of their ability.
Just my 2 cents worth,

Here are a couple of shots of the crystals that I made. My technique still needs altering (I'm not quite sure why they're not turning out the way I want) but they're okay. My first batch was blue, then I just added more dye to that water to make a purple and a green batch, which were darker because of the higher dye concentration.

Actually, I love the effect you got - they look more natural with the darker spots
And just for the record, I now hate you for bringing this up, because I have to find borax and make some (kidding, darling, of course I don't hate you). Well, actually, I think my daughter will be interested in making some, so finding borax is my goal today
(I know you can find it in almost every store in the US, but I haven't seen any here).

Holy moly!! those look great. Once they are formed are they very hard? Like, do we know if there is a mohs scale rating for tbem?
I guess I'm wondering if the are water soluble?
The colors are wonderful.

Re: DIY/Crystals On a Budget
If they are borax they would be water soluable, and fairly soft.
Still, very pretty, and the growing of the crystals could lend itself well to being incorporated into certain ritual work

Guess what - I have my first borax crystal red star
Sorry about the quality - my phone doesn't have a nice camera ...

Re: DIY/Crystals On a Budget
I've always been a little suspicious of this crystal ...it looks like an amethyst someone gave it to me many years ago and when I rinsed it off it because it was very dusty, it seemed to melt just a bit ...anyway, do you guys think this is one of those borax crystals too? It's way to egg shaped to have formed that way naturally, and it appears to have a central point at the bottom where a post may have been attached?

Re: DIY/Crystals On a Budget
Firebird, I don't think that's an amethyst... whether it's manmade or not is another question, but having some experience with amethyst crystals, that doesn't look like amethyst other than a similarity in color to me. (Still, I have been wrong before XD) I do not, however, have much personal experience with borax crystals, so. There's my two cents' worth. (One cent's worth, really, since it probably wasn't very helpful XD)
