Wicked looking seed pod!
This is a common name. The one in the picture I picked up while walking by the creek near me. It's easy to see how it's "claws" grab animals passing by in order to spread the seed elsewhere.
There is another plant called by the same name and generally one needs to know the botanical name to avoid consuming something that may be harmful, it would seem the root of both species offer benefits to pain. Which is making me look further into its benefits.
The one pictured is Proboscidea parviflora native to Mexico and surrounds:
