linguistic ineptiude

Postby LaFiamma » Wed Aug 30, 2006 1:42 pm

so I'm not going to cite any specific examples here....because I'm not jumping on anyone in particular...besides, enough people around here think i'm a bitch because I said that I don't think a lot of people actually know what karma is. but do people in the pagan world just not care about grammar, spelling etc?

I frequent a number of web forums, some pagan related, some not and it seems that an inordinant number of people on pagan forums don't seem to care that what they're typing is enough to make someone's eyes bleed.

srsly, trying 2 red sumthin liek this all the tyme iz rlly annoiing an stuf.

And...yeah, I know I'm not perfect either. I'm not talking about a few typos here (And I do try to catch and fix my typos), I'm talking about well, stuff like the line that I typed above. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like one almost has to make a serious effort to type like that.

Can we have some thought on communication please?

Many who post are young. Some never had the education. And others like myself, don't always catch the spelling mistakes or grammar.

After a while when it is really evident that they are just being lazy and using "2" for two, too or to starts to annoy me. But for the most part as long as they haev something to add to the conversation and have put thought into it I doesn't bother me as much.

I wouldn't want someone who had a great idea or input on a subject to NOT respond because of fear of how they may be perceived. Some of the brightest people I have met online couldn't spell to save their lives but I have seen much wisdom come from them.

I think there's a big difference between complete laziness, and not catching a few mistakes. Not having the knowledge or education is not something that I can fault someone for, unless they are simply refusing to learn. Being young? There is a certain point, and I suspect that most people on most forums have past it, where your age is no an excuse for refusing to at least attempt to type coherently.

Whether it adds to the conversation or not, no one should have to read something five times just to try to understand the individual words in a post- let alone the meaning- for the simple reason that the poster didn't feel like bothering to make themselves understood.

Then again, maybe they don't care to be understood. I don't know.

I apologize, but I really don't understand what you mean by "2ent" and "3erd"? Or do you mean 2nd (second) and 3rd (third)?

and which sentence are you referring to when you say you "looked at that sentence"?

Ah...I see.

There's a huge difference between typing like that because of dyslexia (and applause to you for doing the best you can with it, dyslexia is a bitch.) and those that type like that because they just don't care to make an effort.

Yeah, and I wouldn't say it's just people on this forum. People all over the internet make short cuts. Well I agree that it can be annoying to read, when im Instant Messaging I do all kinds of "short cuts." So it's not just lazy people here....lazy people are everywhere!

It's not just Pagans that write like that; it spans most demographics. I find it really annoying, but I generally get around it by just not reading posts like that. I think it's really sad that I know more than a few people that have English as a second, third, et cetera language, and they can write better than so many Americans.

Sometimes, it is unintentional, but there are an awful lot of people that use internet shorthand or just type extremely fast without looking back.

I myself have never used shorthand. I find it really annoying actually, even though most teens my age use it just about everywhere.

Of course, that could be caused in part by the fact that I type mainly with my thumbs, pointer, and index fingers, instead of using all of them as most others do. Plus I always watch the screen and my hands as I type, so I tend to catch my mistakes fairly easily.

The thing is, in chatrooms and such, teens (and others) type very fast, as they want to hurry up and get their 2 cents in, but they tend to forget that on forums conversations don't go by in seonds. In fact, a single conversation here can take months! I think they just don't stop to think that everyone here is not waiting impatiently for them to respond like in some othere places. *cough* myspace *cough*

There's my opinion, enjoy.

Even in chats I don't use that shorthand. Because I think it's stupid. It's only going to take you, like, two extra seconds to spell the words properly. It won't kill you.

Then again...I AM A hardcore grammar Nazi.

I'm a grammar Nazi too, and it annoys the heck outta me to read internet shorthand.

I play World of Warcraft...and if it is one thing that buggers me the most is when these kids feel the NEED to type in internet short hand or (ugh). L337 S33K (leet speak). There is nothing more obnoxious than someone in the main chat (which is the looking for group channel - used to find groups for quests. AND ONLY supposed to be for that purpose, but it's not) going "omg, I am teh pwnzors, lawl." Or if GOD forbid you get stuck in a group with someone who can't spell, heh. Trying to coordinate something is really hard when you don't understand what someone is saying.

I give more slack to those of us on message boards for whom English is a learned language. Ours is a beastly language. But on Warcraft, I don't. Why? Because people have a choice, there are servers set up for every neck of the world. It's very easy to go FIND a server that speaks your lanuage. Plus I just lothe Chinese gold farmers who will send me messages in garbled English and Chinese, asking for stuff. As if I am going to help THEM ruin my server's economy. Scum.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. I just started on WoW and I just....go with it ^^
