Okay... so I want to start collecting my supplies (cauldron, athame, wand, herbs, etc).
While I was in Salem a few weeks ago I tried to find some of these items and while I saw a few I liked nothing really "called" to me. I thought about purchasing on-line, but I am afraid that I will buy something that I like because of the way it looks rather than feeling a connection to it.
What are your thoughts on this, I really want to get started but I want to do it the right way.
Thanks in advance.

Advice on Collecting Supplies
Hi Cyn shed is right but i disagree with the honey and bread, and how do you cut a finger off gently if you go slow and gentle you cause more pain and you dont get the energy, dont forget to treat the wound so paracites cant kill the tree, but thats my view, do it how you feel it should be done

I know how you feel. I've always been the same way about selecting things. At the same time, there isn't really a "right way." It's just a matter of what feels right to you. When I started out (although I'm not Wiccan) everything was makeshift, and it worked just fine. Over the YEARS I found things that I liked and purchased them. Most of them I actually bought online, as they called me through the computer screen.
It is perfectly acceptable to buy supplies online as long as they feel right to you. It's not about the frillz, but rather getting it done. Although I can understand the want or need to have proper things that are sacred/set apart for religious rites. But until you find whatever it is you feel you should have The Most High (or whomever you believe in) will, in my opinion, be accepting of whatever you set apart as sacred in the mean time.
My first wand I made when I was 16 years old... and I only used it twice. A decade later I just purchased one online because I just had to have it... why? I don't know. But I don't even case circles, and when I'm looking for something I lost... I always just use my hand. It took me 8 years to get a black bowl, two year to find chalices, 7 to find a bell.
Regardless, don't worry so much about it. It's not about the things you use, it's what you use them for. It might take a year before you find the perfect athame. It took me 10 to find a dagger I liked, and I just wasn't supposed to have it. They were out of stock... and the company no longer makes them.
Whenever you're supposed to have whatever it is you're looking for, you'll get it.

Though I like to make my own stuff, I also buy a lot.
(of course it can get expensive!
)
I don't really have a problem buying online or through mail order.
To me it's just like buying something from a store: if it feels right, it feels right (fundings permitting, of course).
By the way, I know this is off-topic, but I like your sig Shed

Personally, I like going to second hand stores, junk shops and flea markets and antique shops to get my magickal supplies. This way, you can find inexpensive and unique items, and people don't mind if you handle them to find the right ones.
Wands and athames are hard. I find that trade shows for knives and guns are great for finding an athame. It took me years to find the right one.
Wands, you can make yourself. Trees are everywhere! (Unless you live in Death Valley, the Gobi Desert, or Antarctica)
