Well magick isn't black or white.
Your intentions are.
Black would be negative with the intent to cause harm to others.
White would be selflessness and things to heal.
But, if you do a spell for something good, but your intentions are selfish, it won't be white magick anymore.
I don't really believe in white or black magick. Just magick.

Defining magic into simply white and black is a method of categorizing it to make certain discussions clearer. Unfortunately, some people try to separate magic into black and white which, as Release.the.bats pretty much says, doesn't work.
White: Harmless and/or Positive
Black: Harmful and/or Negative
Most spells fall into 'white magic'. Black magic is what is separated out as it is considered wrong for various reasons that can create an entire debate in and of itself. If you want to know for future reference, I'm not a fan of spells that can easily be labeled 'black'.
But that is basically the answer to your question. Black magic means to cause suffering, negativity or generally bad. White is the rest. If you hear grey, it refers to that which can't clearly be defined as 'black' but has some of the elements of it.

Also to touch on what has already been said; two people could look at a spell and disagree if it's white or black magick - it's all in how you look at what you are doing and how what you do may effect others. It's always a good rule of thumb to consider the law of three whenever you do any spellwork.

You're exactly right, Pixie. Remember that magic is just elemental energy being transformed to bring about change. It is neither 'good' or 'bad'. By using our own personal energy toward an Intent we activate this elemental energy. Therefore we alone determine the use.

Oh so what you're saying, Magic is just pure energy?

Essentially, yes Pixie: but it's an energy that is being manipulated by the practitioner. The energy alone is just energy, it's the intentions we imbue in our workings that give the energy its "purpose" and create the magic we seek.
Kind of like a spoon; without someone using it, it's just a piece of metal sitting on a table. Once someone picks it up and sticks it into a bowl of cereal though, it has become a "spoon".
(Me and my crazy analogies). LOL

Hi Pixie!
Your thoughts are the magic! They are what gives energy its force and direction. When you utilize items in rituals all you are doing is calling on their inherent energy to be added to your own to bring about the Need you need to be fulfilled.
